How can rail operators better manage resources while maintaining service quality?
That was the central question SISCOG addressed at IO2025, APDIO’s event dedicated to Operational Research, held in Amarante from 7–9 September.
As part of the scientific programme, SISCOG presented two talks focused on solving real-world planning challenges in rail operations:
“Rolling stock rotation planning in a regular operation context”
“Scheduling crew reserve duties with flexible time windows”
These talks explored how advanced planning techniques can help operators:
Mitigate delays and cancellations through optimised crew reserve duties
Maximise rolling stock usage while respecting operational constraints such as maintenance and fleet size
Beyond the sessions, IO2025 provided a valuable platform for exchanging ideas and strengthening collaboration within the Operational Research community.
SISCOG’s team returned with fresh perspectives and renewed motivation to continue improving how rail operators plan and manage their resources.
