SISCOG will be at CASPT 2022, the Conference on Advanced Systems in Public Transport and TransitData, from 6-10 November, to present papers about vehicle and staff scheduling optimisation.
Fleet and crew scheduling with significant profitability increase and staff satisfaction

Authors Ana Wemans and Ricardo Saldanha present the following papers at the CASPT event:

  • "Profit-based Optimisation of Rolling Stock Rotations: a case study from North America", co-authored by Ricardo L. Saldanha, and Rita Portugal. This paper addresses a fleet optimisation problem that is relevant for train operations with reserved seats. Because practical problem instances cannot be solved exactly the authors propose an approximate solution method that combines existing techniques in a new way. By using this approach in production environment VIA Rail Canada obtained significant revenue growths and cost savings. They also reported optimiality gaps for small problem instances. | Download full paper here.

  • "Crew Rostering with Fair Satisfaction of Personal Preferences" co-authored by Ana Wemans, Jorge Roussado, and Ricardo L. Saldanha. The paper is about the personalised crew rostering problem in a context where each employee has his own skills, seniority and preferences, where all work has to be assigned and optimisation goals include maximising preference satisfaction and fairness. SISCOG authors propose an approach that combines operational research with auction theory for addressing scenarios where employees may prefer different things and seniority may not be strict, which have not yet been addressed. They evaluate the approach with real world data. | Download full paper here.

CASPT 2022 is a forum for the international community of researchers, practitioners and vendors on all aspects of public transport planning and operations. CASPT covers significant contributions to the theory and application of systems and methodologies for advancing and improving public transport planning and operations. More info here.
